How to Fight the Rising Cost of Fossil Fuels in the Northern Rockies

It’s no secret that the price of fossil fuels is rising.  I’m sure you see it happening, just as I do, on the utility bill each month.  These cost increases can be attributed to a whole host of variables including the shifting supply and demand curves during cold winter months as well as due to the regional and global energy markets.  When you get right down to it, we need energy to heat our homes and the energy companies have leverage to dictate the price of fuel.

Energy companies around Bozeman and Big Sky, Montana are indicating record high prices for delivered propane.  In September I was quoted $2.10 per gallon of delivered propane and a winter pre-buy price of $2.80 per gallon.  Fast forward to December and the same company quoted me propane delivery for $2.59 per gallon – a 23% price increase in just three months!  The winter pre-buy option allows you to lock in to a set rate per gallon up to a maximum dollar amount or fuel quantity over the winter.  You have the option to hedge against high fuel prices.  Chances are you made the right call if you elected to pre-buy this winter.  Energy industry insiders are predicting that the price of delivered propane will go over $3.00 per gallon in this area.  Ouch!

Electricity prices, on the other hand, haven’t varied significantly for years and are not predicted to change anytime soon.  That means $0.10 per kWh of electrical power from Northwest Energy all winter.  You won’t see the price spike up to $0.15 by the end of winter.  This is the type of predictability I like in my life.  And if you are like me, you also like saving money.  Right?

So if it’s time to replace your old, inefficient propane furnace, safeguard against rising fossil fuel prices, or reduce your carbon footprint then you should look into installing a geothermal heat pump.  Geothermal heat pumps simply use reliable and cheap electricity to heat and cool buildings with an incredibly high level of efficiency.  Propane, conversely, is never 100% efficient, is highly combustible and dangerous to have in the home, has a volatile price tag, and sometimes just doesn’t get delivered when the truck fails to show up on time.

Here are some of the advantages of geothermal heat pumps:

It’s all true.  And with a heat pump you have the option of integrating solar panels to supply its power or purchasing power from a renewable source to offset your emissions.  Geothermal is gaining popularity in the Rockies for many good reasons.  Contact THB Energy Solutions to talk about your options for fighting the rising cost of fossil fuels.
